Approximately Optimal Auctions

چکیده
We show that auctions can generate near optimal total expected revenue by not using optimal reserve prices. Suppose we have n = 1 bidders in a posted-price, sealed-bid auction. This bidder has type v i drawn from distribution F. We can describe what the expected revenue is with a functionˆR : T → R: ˆ R(p) = p(1 − F(p)). (1) Figures 1 and 2 show expected revenue functions for the exponential distribution, and the uniform distribution.

A Comparative Study of Multi-Attribute Continuous Double Auction Mechanisms
Auctions have been as a competitive method of buying and selling valuable or rare items for a long time. Single-sided auctions in which participants negotiate on a single attribute (e.g. price) are very popular. Double auctions and negotiation on multiple attributes create more advantages compared to single-sided and single-attribute auctions. Nonetheless, this adds the complexity of the auctio...
متن کاملAn Optimization Framework for Combining the Petroleum Replenishment Problem with the Optimal Bidding in Combinatorial Auctions
We address in this paper a periodic petroleum station replenishment problem (PPSRP) that aims to plan the delivery of petroleum products to a set of geographically dispatched stations. It is assumed that each station is characterized by its weekly demand and by its frequency of service. The main objective of the delivery process is to minimize the total travelled distance by the vailable trucks...
متن کاملThe Pseudo-Dimension of Near-Optimal Auctions
This paper develops a general approach, rooted in statistical learning theory, to learning an approximately revenue-maximizing auction from data. We introduce t-level auctions to interpolate between simple auctions, such as welfare maximization with reserve prices, and optimal auctions, thereby balancing the competing demands of expressivity and simplicity. We prove that such auctions have smal...
متن کاملOptimal and Efficient Parametric Auctions
Consider a seller who seeks to provide service to a collection of interested parties, subject to feasibility constraints on which parties may be simultaneously served. Assuming that a distribution is known on the value of each party for service—arguably a strong assumption— Myerson’s seminal work provides revenue optimizing auctions [12]. We show instead that, for very general feasibility const...
متن کاملSimple vs Optimal Mechanisms in Auctions with Convex Payments
We investigate approximately optimal mechanisms in seings where bidders’ utility functions are nonlinear; specically, convex, with respect to payments (such seings arise, for instance, in procurement auctions for energy). We provide constant factor approximation guarantees formechanisms that are independent of bidders’ private information (i.e., prior-free), and for mechanisms that rely to a...
